The Y chromosome is so challenging to analyze that many early versions of human genome maps ignored the structure altogether. Kaessmann and his group developed a way to quickly sequence the genes making up the chromosome. Both studies of the various roles Credit: Wikipedia/CC BY-SA 3.0 An exhaustive effort to sequence the mouse Y chromosome reveals make for fascinating comparisons of structure, gene content, and evolution among the mouse Y and primate Ys, including human, rhesus macaque, and chimpanzee. Eichler and his colleagues put together a diagram to illustrate this ten-million-year saga, which I’ve adapted here. By comparing human chromosome two to the unfused versions in the chimpanzees and gorillas, Eichler and his colleagues reconstructed the The Cleveland team synthesized the ends of human chromosomes, short runs of DNA known as telomeres, and a long stretch of DNA designed to correspond to the centromere, a vital structure toward the center. Human centromeres, the staging posts for the This image shows 3-D modeling of the human malaria parasite genome at one of the stages of its life cycle. Each color represents one of the 14 chromosomes of the parasite genome, the exception being purple (indicates genes known to be involved in virulence). The 3D structure for the malaria parasite genome revealed chromosome morphogenesis and genome stability. In human cells, changes in chromosome organization and compaction can lead to diseases such as cancer. “If we understand how the malaria parasite .

The results overturned the expectation that the chimp and human Y chromosomes would be highly similar. Instead, they differ remarkably in their structure and gene content. The chimp Y, for example, has lost one third to one half of the human Y chromosome Human cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes the chromosomes found in eukaryotic organisms such as humans and yeasts. The difference in structure of the chromosome means that bacterial cells have profoundly different mechanisms for how their genes are on horizon line in the diagram for each chromosome. Grey dots represent frequencies of non-reference alleles, found in either control or glioma SNVs that were not represented in the reference human genome. X axis shows position along each chromosome They noted that “(t)he human X and Y chromosomes evolved from an ordinary pair of autosomes hasn’t lost any genetic material since then and therefore “the structure is stable.” Additionally, the genes could cause men and women’s bodies .
